Both for those readers who already dipped into “Delusions,” Lorraine DeSousa’s debut novel, as well as for those who only now start to discover her gripping tales, on the other hand, this volume contains a genuine and beautifully penned storyline. When I read the first book, I was impressed mainly by the intriguing and complex characters Mrs DeSousa managed to create. Today, with “This Life” in front of me, I discover a completely different book; it is something else, neither worse, nor better. Just different. Published two years after her 2022 debut, it is not less than another amazing creative display of fireworks of all colours filling the scene: imagination, originality, elegance, impeccable research, and a very well-conducted modern narrative, along with Mrs DeSousa’s already proven mastery of observation. A few twists and turns, that nobody could see coming, kindly make the story even more credible. Featuring simple but beautiful sentences, and a touch of magic, “This Life” is an original true-to-life, but refined tale that captures glimpses of a love journey, with endearment as the very own essence of our builds as mortal parts of humankind. Absolutely full of life lessons, and a very well-written love story, the book is suitable for readers starting at the age of 16, but is particularly helpful for young adults since they can gain a lot of insight from other people’s mistakes. When unhappy with yesterday, go for something different today; it is never too late to find true Love. – seems to be the familiar founding adage of the book. Two more thoughts -just two pennies’ worth- before I let you enjoy the read for yourselves: • I discovered that the author’s main talent is not writing, but driving. Yes, she is slowly driving the readers into the story, until they become part of it; and even if they cannot change the course of (past, present, or future) events, they are all there, next to the characters and live through their experiences - happy or miserable, sane or mad, valiant or weakling, serene or exasperated, and much more than that. • Almost instantaneously, the way how Lorraine DeSousa managed to build the narrative reminded me of the strongly marked rhythm in Maurice Ravel’s Boléro. The same gradual crescendo of the main theme, love, as the instrumentation grows throughout the book. Therefore, besides being readable, “This Life” has also the unique virtue of being a very pleasantly danceable book. In keeping with these being few words, the purpose is nothing else but to arouse readers’ curiosity, so they want to keep reading the book until the very last page. I am afraid I disappointed those in search of any kind of comfort offered by spoilers, but I tried not to ruin the pleasure of reading for all the others.

Do you believe in fate and destiny or do you believe that we create our own future? Either way This life will challenge your beliefs. This is a cleverly written tale of how our lives are intertwined with those around us. It raises thought provoking questions such as would knowing your own future change the way that you behave? And can our actions change the destiny of others? The twist at the end left me wanting to know more about this character. A thoroughly well written book by this author. I am looking forward to reading more books from this author.
