Susan Lepore King is an animated soul. She grew up in a household brimming with creativity: her mother with music, her father with fashion, her sister with writing and her brother with a flair for food. She received a Fine Arts degree from the University of Connecticut, worked as a graphic designer for a bit, then parented three children with her husband. During this time Susan dabbled with drawing, sewing and crafting, but it was the simple activity of playing with her children and their friends that brought her pleasure.
Presently, she is a receptionist at a Residence where she listens to many life stories that pique her curiosity and encourage her to go home to her husband and cats and create unceasingly.
True to her word, Susan’s silliness captures you with the shadowy, animated details of her curiously unusual cast, doing curiously unusual things with curiously unusual skills. Susan initiates creative thinking with vintage childhood phrases, homonyms and rhythmic cadence that lead to open questions and highlight language differences between yesterday’s terms and today’s vernacular. The words are clear and fun to read. The complex art is exquisitely animated. Children will be drawn to question the ‘whys’ and ‘whats’ happening on each page, engaging adult readers to share their perspective. A silly book… a creative look… an awesome start to amazing conversations of what could be, when you’re counting, 1…2…3…
Susie's Silly 1, 2, 3s caused me to giggle, especially the whimsical illustration of four doors jumping rope with apple cores. Hee, hee! The unlikely choices of the many other items to count are nothing short of silly and funny. Illustrations and design of the book include clean lines, smooth blending of pencil values, playful fonts and an uncluttered layout. Reading this book aloud is extremely helpful to those working to hone in on their enunciation skills.
