Pebble and Feather get washed out to sea in a terrible storm and find themselves next to a dead coral reef.
It isn’t a very nice place to be and not at all like the beautiful colourful coral reefs they imagined. Things get worse when a big fish grabs Feather and swims away. Pebble is so upset, and he doesn’t know if he will ever see Feather again! While Pebble is crying and distraught the sea whispers an important message to him about why the coral reef is dead and what must be done.
Deborah Taylor is based in the Peak District, Derbyshire, where she has lived and worked whilst bringing up a family. The inspiration for her writing has been her children as well as her passion for animals, the natural world and the sea. Finding a way to introduce environmental issues to children without causing them to worry is something she feels strongly about. Deborah is also an amateur artist and has had a lifelong love of horses and horse riding.
Pebble and Feather tell an important underlying message about how the sea is being affected by global warming and having detrimental effects on the Reefs. I read this to my children (4 + 6) and they really connected with Pebble and Feather who are very personable characters. The book is told in a way that makes it simple for children how the reefs are being affected but with a message of hope that we all have the power to make changes.
Both boys loved the illustrations in this book, the colours are really vibrant and beautiful. Leo really loved the rhyming sentences too.
I’m not sure Leo was quite old enough to grasp the message of saving the coral reef but nonetheless, the book was engaging and has been read quite a few times and we had great fun pointing out the different fish and looking at the coral reef.
A story about friendship, loss and ultimately keeping our oceans clean so that the coral and fish stay healthy!
It’s a good starter book for your wild things to start learning about our environment from an early age!
