Fatal accidents are rarely caused by a single mistake but are often the result of a series of errors. A chain of poor decisions leaves Ian White – golf professional and happily married father of two teenage daughters – with a hellish choice. Should he report the death of Katerina Wysklow, a hitchhiker whom he accidentally kills while having sex with her? If his shame becomes public, it will destroy his family. If he conceals the truth, he must find a way to deal with the horror and his guilt.

In parallel to White’s unravelling, the police investigation of Katerina’s disappearance uncovers sex videos of Katerina with different men and unexplained cash deposits into her bank account. The mounting evidence points to her boyfriend’s father – a close friend of White’s – and Katerina’s last known contact on the day she vanished. Will the wrong man be charged? Will White be exposed? Will his conscience intervene? Or will the reckoning come from another direction entirely?

James Cairns McMahon lives in Scotland. During a varied career he has been a bricklayer’s labourer, milkman, tax inspector, accountant and businessman. Fitting writing around a hectic family life, he also enjoys bridge, football, padel and golf, attempting to improve the latter since he was eight.

Enjoyed it from the moment I picked it up and snuggled to put it down. So nicely written to draw you in !!

This was brilliantly gripping from cover to cover...i couldn't wait to see how it ended and it did not disappoint....I did not see *that* coming! This would make a fab movie or TV series....I've pretty much cast it already!

I loved this book, at times I was crying with laughter. I thought I could sense the end of it but got it totally wrong. A very clever book which will take the readers to really think. Only downside was i finished it so what do I read now.

Great read, intriguing storyline and thoroughly unpredictable ending. A bit of an international fling about it, Scotland and Portugal. All together a delightful and challenging way to wile away an afternoon.

Very enjoyable. Twists and turns, and just when you think you know how it’s going to pan out it throws another curve ball. Didn’t see that ending coming. Can’t wait for the next novel!

  • Big Les

Great read with an unexpected twist.
    Highly recommend!

This is an assured debut from James McMahon.
A clever juxtaposition of the use of analytical skills in both scenarios, by a bridge playing young detective, Scott.
There are other parallels too. The unexpected attraction felt by the quarry which initiated the chain of events and the unease felt by the hunter when in close proximity with a female colleague.
The unveiling of the inter and intra connections between the various players in the story does not, however, easily lead the reader to the conclusion.
I look forward to reading about Scott’s next case.

A great read for a flight. Hard to figure out, lots of red herrings. Each time I put it down, it tugged me back in. If you know the West of Scotland, you'll find it even more compelling.

Well-written novel that keeps you engaged from one chapter to the next – now I’ve finished it I want to know what happens to the main characters I suspect the author cleverly leaves it open for further books in the same vein, and the final chapter!! well, I didn’t see that coming!
