A beautifully written and tender story that instantly transports the reader into the nostalgic world of family holidays, sisterly connections, adventures , discoveries and endless summer days. A gentle and heart-warming read with charming illustrations that draw you further in to this special , magical world. You can almost smell the salt of the surf and feel the sand between your toes.
This is a little gem of a book. It celebrates both family bonds and childhood memories. The stories are recounted by Grandma with love, respect for children's curiosity of intellect and creativity as well as their spirit of adventure. Mimi and her two sisters will, no doubt, always ask questions, assert their independence and take on challenges. Mimi fearlessly climbs higher and higher rocks, outwits foxes and explores shipwrecks. Rather than shy away from disaster, she actively courts it! The fey tales, tenderly illustrated, are told with gentle humour and are full of the theatre, drama and, indeed, poetry of life.
What a wonderful collection of stories written by a grandmother about three young girls and their ‘Dadda’. This book is so beautifully written and is about the precious holidays ‘Gma’ spent with her small grandchildren! It is not only such a strong reflection of how important relationships are between grandparents and their grandchildren, but also the importance of adventure, creation and mistakes during childhood. Three young energetic sisters, each with a very different personality and view of the world. The stories and illustrations precisely allow us to feel we are there with them exploring the beaches and wild coves of southern Victoria with grandma – lots of wonderful and funny adventures and I loved the way I could follow the three girls growing up as the book progressed. I have read the stories to my 7 year-old son and he loved them too. He wants his grandma to write some stories about him and wants to be the illustrator too. I will definitely be buying more copies to give to his friends as birthday presents!
These delightful stories evoke a sense of timelessness and the joy and wonder available in simple pleasures. The children in this book are encouraged to range , explore and create their own rich experiences. Beautifully illustrated, these stories of three children, their single father and loving grandmother, had me smiling as I turned each page.
As a children’s storyteller and librarian I warmly recommend this wonderful book about holidays with Mimi and her sisters. A shared reading will surely stimulate happy memories and conversations of the readers family holidays.
