“Mary and the World Table” written by Dr. Fawzia Reza. Fawzia is a professor of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) and the author of several books, essays and articles on the subject. This book is specifically written for children 9-12, but it is for all ages. At a time when there are efforts to remove instruction on Diversity, Equity and Inclusion from schools and universities, it is my hope that the distribution of this book will help spread the positive message of DEI.
“Mary and the World Table” is a truly enchanting children's book that celebrates the beauty and importance of diversity. It helps open children’s eyes to the richness of different cultures and the value of embracing diversity. The story follows Mary, who is differently abled and her 3rd Grade classmates as they encounter families from different backgrounds, each with their own unique traditions, languages, and customs. The book beautifully showcases the vibrancy of multiculturalism, teaching children that our differences should be cherished and celebrated. One of the book's greatest strengths lies in its ability to make diversity relatable and accessible to young readers through both food and school life. The vivid illustrations are also a standout feature, immersing readers in the diverse cultures highlighted. As an early years educator and as a primary/elementary school Principal of many years standing, I can recommend this book as an essential resource for early readers and their teachers in the promotion of empathic understanding of others.
