After coming across the first chapter on Amazon, it managed to surpass my high expectations AND be nothing at all like I expected. This is Reeve's debut novel, but he has complete control of the story and his style. A very compelling and page turning read. This seminal, imaginative and unusual fantasy has elements of Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Miss Marple and Swallows & Amazons (on acid) all masterfully woven into a seamless and wholly captivating 229 pages. It is an extremely well told story of a young John Catchpole setting off for an innocent summer days fishing in the beautiful English countryside with his best friend Bob and Nipper the dog. The incidents that develop are wholly absorbing and the theme, which has implications far beyond the obvious or expected, is skilfully handled and climax naturally in dark yet amusing (yes really) scenes of paranormal rampage and turmoil. This original, alluring, and intriguing story is told with freshness, intensity and power. It’s a first novel that reads like the work of an author who has published many books over many years. I very much hope that Mr Reeve is busy penning the next episode of this exciting tale. Just what is it that Grandma and Ruby can’t put their finger on?
