She is going to sell you something and you will buy it.

It’s Fashion Week and Lower Manhattan churns with construction on the third anniversary of 9/11, as Emma O’Farrell Paige arrives at the federal courthouse to depose her former boss, the diabolical villain behind a counterfeit perfume ring.

With little more than tenacity and courage, Emma breaks free from her dysfunctional Midwest childhood and fights for her long-distance marriage to independent league baseball pitcher Ethan Paige, as she plays to win among world-class dealmakers in the trenches of the international beauty biz.

Under the guidance of mentor and boss Julian Petrenko, Emma masterminds the two-hundred-million-dollar fragrance deal with boy band sensation UK Connection. When the deal of the decade reveals the underbelly of the vaulted Beautyland, Emma is forced to examine herself as closely as she’s studied the beauty game.

I loved every word, paragraph, page and chapter!
I know many others will find Dana Kline’s book “Beautyland” interesting and a great read. I just loved it.

Dana Kline not only knows the beauty industry inside and out – she knows human nature.  “Beautyland” showcases the best and the worst in people, populated as it is by a cast of very life-like characters with all of the cunning and avarice that unfortunately have come to epitomize the world of business today.

Yet, just beneath the surface of this hard to put down book, there remains a steady stream of optimism, a hope that strength of character can somehow overcome adversity. From page one to the very end, it keeps you wondering what could possibly happen next.

BEAUTYLAND is a coming of age story in the broadest sense. The daughter of grifters; fleeing her dysfunctional background yet loyal to her roots & the hometown boy she loves; reinventing herself as she goes; full blown success; ultimately caught in a web of corruption but savvy enough not only to recognize it, but also to come to terms with what she really needs to triumph. She follows her moral compass until it intimately finds true north

I couldn't put this book down. I wanted to see Emma make it through the power hungry beauty business world after coming from nothing.

Beautyland is a must-read to anyone who has been making their career in the beauty industry; the story of the hard-working girl rising to the very top of the industry is not only compelling, it is so relatable (we've all met some of those characters no matter where you work). You cannot wait to read where the next page will take her!

I really engaged with the storyline, with each character they are well described and well-formed, the devilish ones as well as the little more angelic.

I loved the description of the SJP worthy shopping sprees. Emma’s wardrobe grew as her expertise did et voila, hello head to toe haute couture.

The spine of the novel is of course all about business in Beautyland, but it’s beautifully cushioned out with so much more. A very clever novel.

I really highly rate it and thoroughly enjoyed it!

Beautyland was such an interesting read for me, it follows the story of Emma, who is a determined woman making her way to the top of the beauty industry. This book is perfect for anyone who is in the beauty industry already or wants to make it, very inspiring! Beautyland keeps you excited, it’s the book that keeps on giving with each page more interesting than the last.

Beautyland by Dana Kline is one of those books that keep you wanting to read, right from the very first paragraph. “She is going to sell you something and you will buy it.” This is so very true for Emma O’Farrell Paige, married to her hometown sweetheart Ethan Paige who is a baseball pitcher, they have both broken away from their Midwestern, dysfunctional family to pursue their careers.

This story of a woman pursuing her need for a career in the beauty industry takes her to various positions, working with characters that seem so real. She works her way up until she is working with Julian Petrenko. With him, she takes on the two-hundred-million-dollar fragrance deal with boy band sensation 'UK Connection'.

I know absolutely nothing about the beauty industry, but I felt myself rooting for Emma as she works her way up in the 'beauty' scene. Filled with likable and not so likable people, but Emma perseveres in her career and her marriage that with most people would be hard to do. She is faithful to herself and her marriage, a tough road but they make it in spite of the obstacles for both of them. An interesting read for anyone to take. It is noticeable that the author knows the beauty industry inside out and it definitely shows in her writing. This book is a must-read, for anyone interested in the beauty industry or to just read for the heck of it. I did and I am glad I did, not often that you can find a book that is so down to earth that you almost think you know Emma and Ethan.

When I started the book, I was immediately sucked in by the dysfunctional family background of Emma and her determination to become a successful businesswoman. Although the writing became technical at parts, overall, it was a good read. There are many unexpected turns in the book which I did not see coming and following Emma's way of thinking was very enjoyable.

Dana’s first-hand stories give an eye-opening view of the beauty industry from start to finish. No wonder beauty hurts!

I give this book 5 stars which I don't often do.

I spent 25 years in the fragrance and beauty biz, working my way up from a fragrance model to an Account executive. Although I never met the author, we have worked with many of the same people. This book was right up my alley and brought back many fun…. and not-so-fun memories. Thanks, Dana…. looking forward to the sequels!

  • Susan P

An engaging novel based on real-world insight into the world of beauty, as well as a tale of perseverance and gumption.

  • Hugh Nini

Enjoyable Read for anyone, even if you didn't grow up in the cosmetics/beauty world. Beautyland.

  • Jeanette Cave

What a pleasant and amazing surprise...
Old flower-child that I am, what I know about the beauty industry would not fill a thimble but I thought I'd give the book a try, anyway. I fell in love with the character, Emma, and her gutsy and determined rise from a dysfunctional homefront to fulfil her dreams on an international scale, her brash personality, her sometimes abrupt honesty spun a compelling adventure. The story is intriguing, honest, and filled with self-reflection that exposes insecurities based on Emma's shaky 'roots'. In a way, it's a love story, love between two young survivors of a hard-knocks existence, love of the validation Emma gains when people recognize her savvy and drive, love of the results she orchestrates through hard work, sharp, focused attention, and emulation of those she admires. Her vision never falters and she is a rags-to-riches central character

Interesting to read about the dirty side of the beauty industry. Everyone will be able to relate to the retailers, the cities and relationships. Those who worked in the industry may have some fun trying to connect the dots!
