The author has captured in words and lavish illustrations (many of his own that have never been seen before), the stories of over one hundred men and women whose personal motor racing journeys paved the way to establish and explode this sport. They did so both locally and overseas, showing that Aussies were as good as the world’s best when it came to not only skill behind the wheel but also in the design and manufacture of the fastest cars, and in organising events of the highest level and regard.

As the title suggests this book is a combination of personal musical memoir, travelogue and recollections of a sometime vinyl record and memorabilia collector, wannabe journalist and photographer. It traces the author’s journey both literally and metaphorically across and through a range of musical genres including those discovered during his extensive international travels. From early exposure to The Beatles through to Soul and Blues and on to the more exotic sounds and experiences from across Africa, Eastern Europe and The Middle East to Central America and beyond. However much of the focus here revolves around the Manchester music scene. Whilst there is much here to please the musical geeks with regard to collecting, it is the author’s stories and anecdotes, many involving luminaries from across the musical spectrum that truly engages the reader.

The book includes recollections from notable gigs and concerts including the infamous Derby Hall / Joy Division riot in Bury shortly before singer Ian Curtis committed suicide. This includes postscripts to that gig that are unique and unreported. But whatever your musical taste, this book contains much more. Allowing the reader to share in the author’s emotional and candid roller-coaster ride through his experiences, musical and otherwise, both near and far. My Journey to Becoming a Black Male Social Worker

This book is a frank and detailed telling of experiences of racism, lack of support and the challenges experienced on the quest to become a social worker. Debonico Aleski Brandy-Williams holds nothing back and is unapologetic in highlighting the positives and negatives of his journey this far. He feels that as a black male social worker, his story is one that should be told.

He has a passion and a drive to help young people, especially young black boys/men, achieve their full potential and considers himself an advocate of finding new, innovative, and unconventional ways to engage and communicate with young people. Aleski is also interested in how young people use trust as a sacred commodity and to this extent, he has developed and is doing further research on a concept he has conceived called the ‘Paradigms of Youth Trust’.

Aleski decided to write this book to highlight the challenges and obstacles faced by black social workers as they start and continue their chosen career path. He has used his personal experiences, along with some of his previous research from his postgraduate dissertation which was entitled The Black Male Effect: Challenges & Experiences of Young Black Male Social Workers in Children and Young People Services.

Aleski hopes that this book is enjoyed by all who read it, and that it will help to continue the conversations and changes that needs to happen within the social work sector. Miles Maskell has lived a varied and adventurous life, and has travelled widely as amply demonstrated in his anecdotes. Taken out of school at 15 years old to join my Father’s troupe of acrobats on tour with Boswell’s Circus in Southern Africa; I was untrained as an acrobat and learned the basics on the two weeks’ boat journey from Southampton to Cape Town. I also played alto Sax and Clarinet in the circus band. I guess I’m an entrepreneur; it was easier in the 1950s–1970s to succeed without formal qualifications such as a university degree or even a couple of A Levels. I was also one of the youngest JPs in the Inner London Juvenile Courts thanks to advice from the Master of then Rolls and support from Lady (Elspeth) Howe.
