Hilda Torres is a wife, mother and grandmother, who immigrated to the United States from Cuba with her parents when she was two years old. She has always lived in beautiful South Florida. Hilda studied English literature at St Thomas University, in Miami, and has a love for reading, and for books. She has a son who is 30 years old and was diagnosed with autism very early on in his life. Back then, autism was not a well-known neurological disorder.

This diagnosis inspired her to work with children who have autism spectrum disorder. When her son started first grade, she decided to teach children with special needs. She worked in the first school in South Florida to have an ‘Autism Pilot Program’; a program that integrated children on the autism spectrum into the public-school setting. There, she worked alongside an incredible team of teachers and professionals in the field of autism to make a difference in the way kids with autism were going to be taught.

Once her son got older, she decided he needed her full-time and quit working in order to meet his needs. She has since dedicated herself to helping her son and spreading autism awareness. Hilda wanted to write something that kids with autism and their families can relate to. A book that not only can teach others about autism but can also give the autism community a different kind of voice. She is so happy to present to you these two amazing characters. Come with us and enjoy their adventures and see autism through their eyes.

Hilda Torres 'Day at the Zoo' is the first instalment in the 'Tonio and Bear's Adventures' book series. Illustrated by Israel Martinez, the colourful pages of the book would capture kids' attention at first look. It is a fun-filled read. Tonio and his close friend Bear take us on an adventure at the zoo.

Tonio and Bear are excited to meet and feed various animals. Rhinoceros, Giraffes, Gorillas, etc are some of the animals they met. Tonio is a child with autism. He finds it difficult to communicate properly and the way he reacts to others is also different.

When he hears loud noises, he keeps his hands on his ears. At the zoo, there is a crowd. Will Tonio be able to stand close to the people or will he feel scared? What action would his friend Bear take in such a situation?

This is an amazing book that helps us to understand the children with the autism spectrum in a better way. The language used in the book is lucid and it is easy to follow. The illustrations are beautiful and make the book more lively. The author-illustrator duo have done a great job in this book. I am delighted to read this book. Looking forward to reading more books by the author.

I love reading Children's books to my nephew as they teach important lessons and are fun to read. Recently I read the book 'Tonio and Bear's Adventures: Day at the Zoo' to him. The main characters of the story are Tonio and Bear. They are good friends. Tonio is autistic and Bear understands his challenges. He helps Tonio and takes him to the zoo to see some animals.

At the zoo, we see Tonio very excited to see different animals. His only concern is the noise and the people at the zoo. Bear told Tonio to only focus on the animals. This made Tonio feel better and he is excited to feed Rhinoceros, Giraffe, etc.

Grab a copy of this book for your little ones and enjoy this story with them. Kids could learn different animal names and how fun a day could be at the zoo. This book teaches a valuable lesson to all of us:

"Autism is a part of our world, not a world apart!"

The writing style of the author is nice. The cover photo is eye-catching. The illustrations are pretty and made me feel as if I was at the zoo myself. This book is for readers of the age group 3-8 years. Parents should add this book to their children's bookshelf.
