How can Gabe make amends for a life lived badly? How can his being in charge of a freight lift, left over from a warehouse conversion, allow him to help the disparate residents of Harrington Hall? There’s Robbie who lies about reading at home to his teacher because he knows his mum is too busy. Miss Ilene James, who seems to have little connection to the real world, or Mrs Davies whose world comes crashing down. Then there is Sam, newly moved to the area and locked into shift work at the hospital; or Mrs Cole, a widow and retired teacher unsure of developing a new relationship; and the Captain, a life at sea leaving no-one on land at his retirement. All of them living their separate and, at times, lonely lives. Gabe has to look back at his own life to forge a path into the future for the people he comes to know and love.

Lin Bird lives in the South Wales valleys and was a teacher until a diagnosis of leukaemia and a bone marrow transplant led to early ill-health retirement. Dealing with a life changing illness brought a sharper focus on the things that matter in life. Writing had always been a guilty pleasure but it was the imposition of the lockdown in March 2020 that created a space to bring her writing to the forefront. Lin picked up the threads of a novel that had been bubbling away on the back burner of her mind for many years. Believing in the life changing nature of reading and the importance of redemptive acts led to the writing of The Lift Book Club.

WOW! I was lucky to get an advance copy of 'The Lift Book Club', I was led through the lives of various occupants of Harrington Hall, getting to know their backgrounds and understanding why Gabe was there. As you read on your begin to realise how small gestures of kindness can make a whole world of difference, something we can all learn from. The ending made me cry with a warm smile and understanding. Lin Bird has a way of writing everyday emotions, loneliness, fears, the sadness of regret, keeping us entertained and leaving us wanting more.

The Lift Book Club is a wonderfully engaging read, its characters unfurl and become people you would like to meet.
Gabe's compassion and understanding of human frailty shines through and it shows the power for change that small gestures of kindness and thoughtfulness can.
I sincerely hope that there will be other titles from this author in the future which I will look forward to reading.
