The beach could be an exciting, thrilling and sometimes a little bit of a scary place to a small puppy;  the ground on the beach tickled and felt odd under his paws and there were strange little creatures that seemed to scurry sideways, but Sammy didn’t like them as they could nip your nose and that hurt, he also thought the water tasted very odd and made you very thirsty.

Welcome to Sammy’s world, which he shares with the twins Steven and Sarah. Join him during this first year and discover with him that there is a much wider world outside the cottage and the beach;  where life is one big adventure to be shared and enjoyed with the twins, but at the end of the day, it is warm, safe and filled with love and laughter.

Rusty was born in Pembroke Dock in Wales, the youngest of four in an RAF family. The family moved around for the first few years until they settled in Hertfordshire, where Rusty was educated.

Rusty tried her hand at various jobs, including a short three year stint in the Women’s Royal Air Force, but eventually settled on training as a Lawyer.

In her private life, Rusty found that children warmed to her and after writing many short stories for pleasure decided to turn her hand to producing something a little more substantial, and so, Sammy the Spaniel was born.

Sammy The Spaniel And So The Story Begins by Rusty Godwin is a charming book, perfect to be read to young children or for more confident readers to read themselves.
There are several tales within the book about Sammy and ten year old twins Steven and Sarah.
Each chapter is a new adventure for Sammy – going to the beach, on a farm, bonfire night, Christmas and more. All are very charming tales as we experience life from the point of view of Sammy, although the book is written in the third person.
The illustrations are simply done but a lovely accompaniment to the tales. Sammy is such a cute, small puppy.
I absolutely loved the book. The tales were totally delightful. I think they would translate well into a children’s television series and with accompanying merchandise – I would certainly love a cuddly Sammy.
I can recommend this book to all with young children.
I received a free copy from the publishers. A favourable review was not required. All opinions are my own.
