Living in a quiet corner of rural Northern Ireland in the 50s and 60s, children had an idyllic freedom to explore plus a healthy respect for hard work and community spirit. Moving from this, to the bustle and confusion of London, enjoying a short spell living in historic Bath to then living in the Far East, was in itself a lifetime experience.

But follow this on with a broken marriage, a protracted divorce and the harsh realities of living with the ‘troubles’ in Northern Ireland, was a route not experienced by everyone.

Starting again, in the hitherto unknown world of a ‘word smith’ in Public Relations, which included working across the UK, Europe, Bosnia (during and post-conflict) and in Kosovo (post-conflict), was a new route. This process was an accidental rather than a deliberate choice. It flowed out of necessity, drawn by instinctive reaction to circumstances rather than by design.

These experiences form the basis of this narrative.

Born on her grandfather’s farm in Co. Armagh, Betty Dawson was the eldest of six children and attended the local schools before joining the civil service and working in London. After marriage, she lived in England and the Far East before returning to UK. After divorce, Betty worked in local newspapers before taking up the role of a public information officer within the UK and then in the Former Yugoslavia. Now retired and living back in Northern Ireland.

This is a lovely book - it draws the reader into the heart of a very human story, and invites you to follow the author through all the meanders, detours, and destinations of her fascinating life.
Told with passion, and containing some very thoughtful sections (including some very sensitive episodes), the book is exceptionally well written.
This is a very honest read: elements of humour, but also occasional despair and tragedy; it is a chronicle of a life lived well in the fact of fascinating crosswinds and sometimes tough headwinds, always walking forward with a smile whenever one was possible.
    Highly recommended.

I have just finished reading the book 'Reflections of my life', by Betty Dawson.

This book is an honest story of the author's life, from childhood to adulthood. The wonderful parents and grandparents whose genes she obviously inherited.

She has openly written about the wonderful times of her life and the horrific sorrowing times, and living through the troubles in Northern Ireland.

I would truly recommend it to readers who prefer real-life stories to get this book. I found it absolutely amazing, truthful, and very sad in parts.

    A wonderful book.
