In this futuristic thriller, reverse engineered Androids and cutting-edge robotics threaten the stability of the newly rebuilt Western United National Coalition Zones. Against a backdrop of advancing capitalism and human augmentation, citizens are monitored by biochips, while Augmented Agents walk a fine line between safeguarding national security and sacrificing personal freedom. As the Agents navigate the ever-evolving landscape of Coalition enemies, they must confront their own limitations and adapt to survive in a world where obsolescence looms large. In his debut novella, "Mechanical Gods," Anthony Michaels, a former computer hacker, introduces a fascinating and conflicted worldscape and cast. It opens in the bustling metropolis of “New Washington.” Replete with flying cars and hyperloop trains, this is now the official headquarters of America’s president. Despite the presence of protesters, earthquake aftershocks, and talk of civil war, the UN Secretary pushes a rose-colored post-war agenda of order and optimism, promising an “age of new renaissance.” The promise truly rings vapid and flimsy when answered with a terrorist bombing. At a frantic pace, agents set out to stop suspected terrorists - Coalition Enemies - humans, robots, and droids vying for position and power. This sci-fi, action thriller seriously examines future outcomes of humanity divided by technology, and also threatened by it. The author deftly handles philosophical and ethical issues of characters participating in a civilization dancing on “the edge of evolution,” while “intertwining flesh and circuitry.” For many, the questions asked are uppermost in our minds right now.
What happens when humans design invincible machines that can think for themselves, repair themselves, and because they have no emotions, fear nothing? Yes, indeed, they do seem like gods. I recommend this highly. If adapted for the pilot of a TV series, it would especially appeal to fans of films like The Terminator and The Matrix.
