Route finding along the bottom of a deep gorge, or facing a huge breaking wave, the challenge is to succeed. The adventure, whether it be on a steep 2m wide stream in the Scottish Highlands or the mighty Grand Canyon of the Colorado River, brings with it great rewards, but occasionally close calls. Mike shares an impressive travelogue of paddling adventures, brought to life with reflections and photographs. He introduces us to a light-hearted consideration of scrimblies and deeper notions relating to the motivation and reasoning that has inspired him to seek out new challenges, through paddling white water.  We discover how teamwork, planning and expertise can merge into those few rare euphoric moments of pure content. You will be inspired to go and look around the next corner for your next adventure.

Having paddled more than 300 rivers in 23 countries over 40 years Mike Hayward has a habit of seeking out new challenges. He is a keen outdoor adventurer who still explores by river and sea kayak, canoe and mountain bike. Not deterred by standing out from the crowd, he previously published ‘Rivers of Cumbria’ and then widened his horizons, in a series of seemingly more challenging adventures. He has led expeditions around the globe including unpaddled rivers in UK, Nepal and Sikkim. Mike is still an active paddler, utilising his extensive knowledge, sharing new adventures and inspiring fellow paddlers with his enthusiasm.

The strapline says it all 'Adventures with Kayaks'. Captivating accounts of potential epics, Mike shares his often entertaining personal thoughts on his experiences and predicaments in which he finds himself. His travels take him around the globe, in constant search of new whitewater. He describes the trials and tribulations of some dramatic journeys, recounting experiences deep inside river gorges both when the way out is down and sometimes up vertical! I can recognize the adventures we have shared together and the quality of the recall and detail in the scenes make for an informative and inspirational account accompanied by photographs that have captured the moment.

In amongst the adventure is a light-hearted theory about the existence of scrimblies to which incidents can be credited, Mike's style of writing here is even poetic! He puts his own spin on the river grading system and has a thought-provoking approach to decision-making prior to running a rapid, aimed at all paddlers. His open and honest account of his feelings adds a personal touch. Transport issues and dilemmas, often in countries where communication is limited or non-existent, together with details of epic descents you just do not want to repeat, make this a read you do not want to miss.
