This is a fun, action-packed story with a twist at the end to allow for discussion between reader and listener. This could be used as a focus for discussion in PSHE lessons or as a one-to-one chat between the child and parent/carer.

Jack, the main character, is a very likeable and charming pirate. He appears to be extremely courageous. Throughout the story, he is portrayed as a very brave character who steers and leads his ship, The Mucky Duck, through a storm to a place of safety. Clearly, his crew look up to him for inspiration and guidance at a time when they are very afraid, but Jack performs his duties without hesitation. The story frequently reminds the reader/audience that although Jack appears to be brave, he has a secret! The story ends with the crew and The Mucky Duck reaching an idyllic cove where everyone is safe and happy!

A land filled with:

‘Treasure and gold and jewels,

palm trees and coconuts!’

All that Jack wants to do is to go to sleep in his cosy bunk in his cosy little cabin and dream of his adventures all over again!

Susan Brunt (Nanny Sue) is a retired Primary School Teacher who has taught many children to learn how to read and to develop a fascination of books and stories. Susan lives on the edge of the beautiful Staffordshire Moorlands where she enjoys walking and observing the local wildlife. Susan also enjoys travelling and over the years has visited many interesting and fascinating places. During her travels she has been fortunate to sail across the oceans and has experienced storms at sea just as ‘Jack The Pirate With A Secret’ does in the story.

The illustrations are beautiful. The story is exciting and it deals with Jack being uncertain of his abilities but Jack completes his difficult task. Jack shows courage and bravery to help others to safety.
This book encourages children to talk about Jack's secret and so, therefore, could encourage children to talk about their secrets and to whom to talk to.
I would highly recommend this book.

"I have really enjoyed reading 'Jack, the pirate with a secret'.

Beautifully illustrated book that children of a younger age will find enjoyable to have read aloud to them.

As a librarian in public library this book would be brilliant for class visits for older children.

Story has a hook and imagination that leaves a reader thinking about Jack's secret"
