After hearing that his mum’s cancer had returned, Harry felt an overwhelming darkness around him and his family. A dark cloud loomed over him and it felt like it would never leave. Struggling to make sense of everything, Harry’s world crumbled around him.

A heart-felt and thought-provoking true story which dives into the abstract mind of a child whose mum is dying of cancer.

Harry Hillier is a Deputy Headteacher of a primary school who is committed to helping children learn and grow as young people. Through his teaching, he wants children to know that anything is possible if they trust their own potential and believe in themselves.

Harry began writing as a teenager in his diary. Through his years of teaching, he has found how picture books can open the minds of the young and old with their hidden meanings and different structures.

In his spare time, Harry enjoys adventures with his family, playing with his two young sons, reading, cooking for friends, playing rugby, and keeping fit and healthy.

This book is a MUST HAVE for any School, councillor, clinical professional or family dealing with cancer.

I work in a Pastoral Team for a Primary School and this book was highly recommended by a colleague to help children and families who are struggling with cancer.

I cannot speak highly enough of it. The open and honest approach, with the information children need to process what is happening, has long been known to be the best way to help and this book is written perfectly for that purpose. The beautiful illustrations perfectly capture the emotions and give hope to those who may be sadly left behind.

I have no doubt that it will be a beacon of hope and self-help for many families living with, or recovering from, cancer.

To the author: please continue to write with your emotional honesty. You are truly transforming lives.

To the illustrator: thank you for giving visibility and life in such a relatable and digestible way. What a talent.

Please write more! "Into the light"!

This book takes an insightful walk through what a child might experience when faced with grief and especially losing a parent. With an uplifting ending, it can help to open difficult discussions with children who are in the depths of grief.

Very occasionally a book comes along which touches so many parts of the human soul and to which we can all relate - child and adult. Into the Dark is such a book and encompasses both sorrow and healing. It is a truthful and poignant story accompanied by beautiful and exquisite illustrations. It is more than a children’s book, much more. Read it and you too will be inspired by the light.

Children and adults will both benefit from reading this very raw account of losing a loved one. My 11-year-old said “the author must be the bravest person ever”, and my 8 year old said, “he hoped his loved ones turn into beautiful birds one day so he can see them often”. Will help grieving children see light at the end of a dark tunnel! Thank you for this

A touching and heartfelt story about life for a young boy after losing his Mum to cancer. This book is beautifully illustrated. The story deals with a challenging, but sadly familiar, topic. A great story to use as a way to open up discussions about bereavement and loss with school-age children. Every school should own a copy of this book.

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book. It will provide a tool to enable young people to talk about sadness and bereavement when they have lost someone close to them. I recommend it to any family or organisation where there is a child who is grieving.
