Ta once said it would be easier for her to walk on the moon than become an artist. She left school at 12 to work in the rice fields. At 13, she worked in a sweat factory in Bangkok making shirts. At 14, she was driving a pick-up truck seven days a week, 14 hours a day, selling vegetables. At 20, Ta had her own business selling pick-up trucks. It was pure chance that a cheeky little drawing she did later in life changed her life forever and got her into the world of art.
Egg Island is a delightful adventure that sparks the imagination. Ta Byrne's story follows lovable characters through danger and joy, keeping me hooked from start to finish. The author has created a world of simple beauty that made me wish I could visit. The book's unique setting, Egg Island, feels both magical and familiar. As I read, I found myself caring deeply about the characters and their journey. Byrne's storytelling reminds us of the wonder we often forget in our busy lives. This book is more than just an entertaining tale - it's a gentle reminder of the importance of friendship, bravery, and finding your place in the world. Ta Byrne's Egg Island is a special book that I think will appeal to readers of all ages. It's the kind of story that stays with you long after you've finished reading.
Egg island is a beautiful place and this story about the island and its egg people is told in a charming way. The writing style and translation deliver a tale in the finest traditions of storytelling. It tells of how friendship and kindness can still attract greed and betrayal, but doing the right thing in the face of adversity can bring reward. A fairytale and an adventure combined, delivering a great read for all ages.
It’s been a while since a book made me laugh, cry, or even made my mouth water, but this one did. Though it’s a children’s book, its appeal crosses all ages with its classic, adventurous charm. The story is filled with bizarre and unforgettable characters: humans with faces resembling fried eggs, talking baboons, firebugs as large as coconuts that light up the village, and truly wicked villains. And let’s not forget Captain Thomas and his crew, plus coconut crabs—vividly orange and cat-like, enjoying a good belly scratch. There’s a treasure of immense value at the heart of the tale, along with villains eager to seize it, leading to kidnappings and ocean chases. Yet, amid all the action, there are moments of kindness that lift your spirits. The book offers many great stories, with my personal favorites being the trial and Sabo's visit to the London tailor shop. Ta Byrne’s imagination is as captivating as her artwork, and after seeing her paintings, it’s easy to understand how Egg Island came to life. I’m excited to see what comes next in this imaginative world.
This is a book full of strange characters and strange things but don’t be alarmed it’s normal here like bright orange coconut crabs with cat like habits who like to have their belly scratched and baboons who think they one the place and hold a court of law, fire bugs as big as coconuts who light up the village and dangerous characters in London. Ta wrote this book in Thai I translated it to English Ta is a best selling artist with a number of online galleries and has sent her work to 67 countries. The turning point in her artistic career came about in 2017 when she painted a Lady wearing a scar but with an Egg as a face. When I first saw it the next morning I thought she had gone mad and no one would buy that. I put it on sale later that day it sold within 10 minutes and I could have sold it 10 times more. In 2023 Ta started writing Egg Island she wrote it on her phone which took her about 9 months then we translated it to English with the help of our daughter it was difficult the translation to English wasn’t easy and Ta wanted it word for word how she wrote it that took several weeks going over it again and again until Ta was happy.
