This diary and narrative was written by Signaller F. Horsfield of the 7th Armoured Division. After serving two years in the Middle East, he returned to this country for fourteen days’ leave then rejoined his regiment and later took part in the invasion of France.
Francis Horsfield was born on the 17th January 1917 in Darwen Lancashire into a working-class family, the youngest of four children. He volunteered for the army and was trained as a signaller. He died on the 6th November, 1975.
Alamein To Berlin 1942-1945 by Francis Horsfield is a short book of a World War II veteran’s diary.
The reader hears of the journey from England to Africa on board the Queen Mary. It was often turbulent causing seasickness, incredibly hot and an ever-decreasing quality of food for the troops. Francis Horsfield kept in good spirits as he wrote his daily diary.
There are also longer accounts of the battle of Alamein and D-Day.
Francis Horsfield writes in a personable style which is accessible for all. He is very matter of fact and courageous as his words show no fear.
Alamein To Berlin is a fascinating snapshot in history by a man who lived through it. It is important to read Francis Horsfield’s account in his memory and in the memory of all those who served. If only we would learn the lessons of history.
