This Is Why Adult Colouring Books Are On The Rise

Struggling to find something to do on a rainy Sunday afternoon? Over the last year, a new popular publishing trend might just have the answer! This low cost, low maintenance trend will have you occupied for hours on end.

Adult colouring books have blossomed over the past year, with array of themes to choose from. It seems that there are books for everyone. With the run up to Christmas looming adult colouring books are the perfect stocking filler.

There is even a desire for a colouring book dedicated to the Labour Leader, Jeremy Corbyn. Who wouldn’t want to colour in pages of a British politician? But if that isn’t up your street you can also purchase adult colouring books about Harry Potter, Game of Thrones and even the international fashion brand Vogue.

According to a recent article in the BBC: the Scottish artist, Johanna Basford, has sold a combined total of more than 10 million copies of her books Enchanted Forest and Secret Garden. So what is it that is making this new colouring publication so desirable?
Is it that colouring taps into people’s former child-self and creativity?  Here at Austin Macauley we would say that it is probably a combination of many things and the simple fact that colouring in, is actually really fun!

With rumours of these books helping with stress, we wanted to research a little further. We found that Aurora University, Illinois, discusses on their website about Meditative Colouring: “Often times when you think of meditation you think of sitting still for a long period of time. With active meditation it is just the opposite. Repetitive motions such as colouring (or running, walking, dancing or even drawing) can help strengthen your focus and easily shift your attention back to a relaxed state.”

Really it makes a lot of sense; we are distracting ourselves so we are not stressed. It is clear that this distraction must have been well needed because on Amazon, the sales of adult colouring books seem to be soaring, with ten percent of the top one hundred Amazon Best Seller books being adult colouring books.

What is even more amazing is that there is a whole section dedicated to the top one hundred Amazon best-selling adult colouring books. With an endless supply of colouring books for adults it probably won’t be long before we start to see this trend at a coffee shop or café near you.
