Teaching Kids the Importance of the Environment

Teaching Kids the Importance of the Environment

The 53rd anniversary of Earth Day is coming up on June 5. This year's Earth Day theme is "Only One Earth." It focuses on the importance of the environment and living sustainably in harmony with nature. The emphasis is on adopting a greener lifestyle individually and by extension, collectively. The theme encourages every business, government, citizen, and public sector to engage, innovate, and create effective change before it's too late.

It’s not too late to begin discussing our environment and planet with children and how we can protect the earth. One of the easiest and most effective ways to do this is through pictures that expose them to the value of nature, trees, flowers, clean water and recycling. To teach the importance of the environment, here are some of the Earth Day activities to boost your children's understanding.

Connect With Nature

Would it be enjoyable to walk through the local park? The ideal method to commemorate Earth Day is getting outside and exploring the natural world.

While they play, children can watch birds and wildlife in their natural habitats, found in cities and conservation areas. There are numerous ways to teach children how nature awakes. In spring, buds that are forming emerge on the trees. Birds sing more frequently as the weather gets warmer. When they look at the world around them, children may be able to develop a passion for nature and our environment.

Create the Earth Day Scavenger Hunt

While your kids explore the natural world, ask them to record their discovered items! There are various ways to record and observe nature that does not require disturbing the natural environment or removing things from it. Write a list of tasks that they should be aware of and observe while walking, such as:

  • Drawing of plants and flowers
  • Birds to watch (and identify them, if they can)
  • Recording or taking photos of any animals they see
  • Recycling and collecting litter with the appropriate equipment, of course.

Nurture a Love for Plants Using Seed Jars

Children are fascinated by science experiments! Engage them in the making of seed containers to celebrate Earth Day. The kids will be able to observe seeds grow and develop into a plant or flower before planting them in the garden when it's done.

What do you need?

  • Water
  • Paper towels
  • A large clear jar
  • Seeds (nasturtium, peas, sunflowers, and beans sprout quickly)

What can you do?

  • Paper towels are folded and placed in jars. Let your children move the paper towels into the container.
  • Inject some water gradually into the container, but make sure you don't fill it to the top.
  • Set seeds on moist paper towels close to the glass's edges to let the kids watch their creations grow in front of their eyes!

Cardboard Box Holder

If there are a lot of cardboard boxes in your home, the easiest method to get rid of them is to put them in the trash. However, let's stop for a moment and consider the planet we live on. Earth is filled with our trash, and we don't need to add any more. So, what can we do?

We must learn to reduce, reuse, and recycle items as much as possible and as quickly as possible! Consider cardboard boxes as an example. You can design a number of unique products without being an expert in crafting. This is one to consider: World Environment Day Cardboard Box Holder! All you need are some sheets of paper and two pairs of scissors! Take a look at this DIY to know how to make these box holders.

Bird Feeder Activity

Animals and birds need our help, particularly in summer, when there's no water! As we help our neighbours during moments of crisis, we also need to assist our aviary friends, the flying machines!

What about creating an eco-friendly bird feeder to allow your birds to enjoy some healthy food? Let's get started with this enjoyable bird feeder project here.

Make an Earth Day Pledge

It's no secret that kids love drawing. Put those skills to good use by making an Earth Day pledge. Write down the things that children would like to do to help maintain the environment's health:

  •  Plant trees
  •  Go paperless
  • Shut off any lights that don't need to be on.
  • Utilize cloth grocery bags instead of plastic bags
  • Try shampoo bars in place of the bottles
  • Make cleaning products with vinegar and lemon
  • Stay with the three R's: Reduce, Reuse and Recycle.
  • Reduce your carbon footprint by reducing waste output
  • Spend more time outdoors than playing video games inside
  • Make use of energy-efficient LED bulbs. They last longer than traditional bulbs.

You can also think of any other ideas you can come up with! Let kids play with their imaginations with a few ideas that they can apply today to fulfil your Earth Day pledge. Encourage them to think of ways to cut down their carbon footprint. They can then note them down on brightly coloured paper.

Books to Read This World Environment Day

We've compiled a list of some of the books we love about the environment that you can read to celebrate Earth Day.

There are many ways parents and teachers can encourage children to take care of the planet.

Earth Day activities teach kids how to decrease their carbon footprint and appreciate all that the earth has to offer us, and work towards protecting the natural environment.

If we can communicate information in an enjoyable and instructive way, it will motivate youngsters to take action to make the world better for future generations.
