Global Recycling Day and Our Love For Books

Global Recycling Day and Our Love For Books

March brings with it two major notable events: International Women's Day and Global Recycling Day. Before we get started on the importance of Global Recycling Day, you can check out our blog on International Women's Day to support our amazing female authors.

Global Recycling Day advocates the practice of recycling in an effort to preserve our precious planet. The primary purpose of the celebration is to promote the efficient use of resources so that the least amount of waste could pollute the earth. Global Recycling Day first began on 18th March 2018. The Bureau of International Recycling formulated this day to increase awareness and recognize the significance of recycling in protecting the primary resources we have and safeguarding the sustainability of the planet.

Physical magazines, books and newspapers are a few products that utilize trees as the primary source of material. But did you know that it requires approximately 20 trees to produce an ounce of paper? Isn't that crazy? And, wait! That's not all. Paper processing involves a variety of additional resources, too, most notably water, and in massive quantities. According to Publishers Weekly, each ton of recycled paper can save roughly around 17 trees, 7000 gallons of water, 4000 kilowatts of energy, and 380 gallons of oil. Do you see? Only if we opt for more sustainable practices and incorporate recycling into our daily lives, how many natural resources would we be able to save.

As a wise man once said, "One man's trash is another man's treasure." Well, that's the essence of recycling and reuse. What might be of no value to one person could become a valuable asset for another.

We can not reiterate enough the importance of reuse and recycling whenever possible. As book lovers, we need to do our bit in preserving the planet's natural resources. So, in this blog, we'll share some essential tips for all readers out there who want to contribute to this cause. As we all know that books tend to get stale on bookshelves once we finish reading them, we don't often return to read the same book multiple times in most cases. The books we own can be of enormous benefit to other people. So why not start the cycle of sharing and reusing the books to help increase the number and distribution of those books which have already been printed and bought.

Be Responsible and Choose Second Hand Books

Gaining access to second-hand books is not only confined to brick and mortar stores anymore. Now, you there are even available on a different website. One of such unique book exchange websites is RelayRead which offers readers a place to read. Readers can easily purchase second-hand books that they like. If you've got a fantastic selection of books, sign up to the website and upload your collection for others to get their hands on. A large number of online users will benefit from the books you have. Similarly, you will be able to enjoy numerous books that other readers offer on the site.

Donate to the Library

If you've been wondering about donating your books to a local library, then that's a fantastic and noble idea. When old books are donated, you may get curious about how others maintain them and who would be using them. The act of giving them to a book library can assure you in some way, and you'll be sure that the books that were important to you are now well taken care of. Specific libraries could also offer you a small amount of compensation for the books. It is possible to get in touch with the libraries that are in your area and make an arrangement.

Barter Your Books

The barter system is an excellent method to reuse and recycle your books. It is possible to exchange books online for those that someone else owns. You may even trade your books with other items or services.

Recycle Old Magazines

You may have plenty of magazines with outdated information or the ones you don't want anymore. Well, they can be easily reused and recycled. There are so many DIY tutorials accessible online these days that can help you recycle magazines. The sky is the limit. Use your imagination and creativity to create something new.

Resell Old Textbooks

The disposal of old textbooks is a forever kind of issue. The decision is whether to dispose of them or keep them in case of future use or donate them to those who are in need. We rarely use books once done with the academic year. Instead, we keep them for a few years and then they eventually get sold off to the scrap collector.

Well, there's an alternative. These books can be offered to a person who actually needs them. When the exams are coming to a close, these books could be sold to potential users. The older books will be of benefit for the students. Sell old books to reduce the size of your shelves. As parents, you can encourage your kids through some pocket money to your children to sell their books to juniors. This will help them make use of the textbooks without damaging their condition and will keep them in good condition until the end of the year.

Set Up a Mini Library

If you have a wide selection of books that you enjoy, you are exactly who this section is made to serve. Repair and recondition the old books. The books can be placed appropriately in a bright space. It is possible to separate the books according to genres. This will allow people to find the genre they wish to read about. You can also open up a mini-library of books for your extended family members or even acquaintances and friends. This won't just enable the books to be reused, but also, in setting up the library, you could have fixed the damaged books, thus saving the texts from degrading and permanent damage.
