Death and Doom in Spooky Season

Death and Doom in Spooky Season

Death is a subject that is tricky for many writers to cover with the depth that is felt from it in real life and it can be approached in a number of ways.

In the ‘spirit’ of Halloween season, we wanted to bring you some of our favourite conveyances of deaths in literature and all things truly morbid.

It should go without saying… spoiler alerts below.

Brighton Schlock

What happens when a biker drag queen uncovers an evil trafficking plot, with the help of his dominatrix side-kick from the flat downstairs; a certain type of wart invades a hospital ward; your teenage GBF turns out to be related to you; shredding machines and other devices take on a life of their own; and horny gargoyles abseil into cocktail parties – all in one of the nation’s most louche hotspots? And just who are these two young boys, skulking through many of the tales? With shared locales and dramatis personae, Merryman Downes’ Brighton Schlock is a fast-paced, surreal, happy, sexy, sad, and ultimately tender suite of interrelated tales where intrigue, horror and seemingly magical occurrences affect the well-weird residents and enclaves of Sodom-on-Sea – or Brighton, as those of us who love it, call it.

Oh – and did anybody mention the astral body-snatching?

Splitting Man

Sarah, together with her husband, Tom, leads her newly formed paranormal investigation team, Haunted Hunters, to Dorchester, in Dorset. Local legend deems the place haunted but recent reports of activity are of a truly terrifying nature. What they find waiting for them is beyond anything they could have foreseen. Caught in the middle of a supernatural battle that has raged through the ages, the team find themselves tested and doubting everything they thought they knew. As the forces of darkness threaten to rip apart the veil separating the living world from the dead, alliances will be formed and torn apart and the dead themselves will become allies. Will anyone survive? This time, not even the dead are safe.

The Vessel of Elseland

Haunted by horrifying nightmares of a world that are beyond the senses of exquisite pleasure and pain imaginable. He slowly spirals down into his personal hell – breaking away any hope and his own sanity. Plagued by questions of what is real and what is hallucination caused by his madness. In these moments, he would be aided by the kindness of a mysterious redhead woman. But is she really a friend or a foe? Dante will soon face the terror of his nightmares and his personal tormentors – triggering a dark path that would change his destiny forever.
