Celebrate World Space Week with Our Space-Age Sci-Fi Novels

On 4th October 1957, the world witnessed the first satellite, Sputnik, being launched into space. Since this was within the Cold-War period, many looked at this development with concern. Equally, for many, it was a moment of great success for science. A year later, the US established its foothold in space with Explorer-I. To make this space race useful for the humankind and not one of point-scoring the Outer Space Treaty was signed on 10th October 1967, which stipulated that outer space development will only be used for peaceful activities.

Since 1999, World Space Week commemorates both these landmark events. Celebrated from of 4th-10th October, the choice of dates coincides respectively with the dates of the first satellite launch and the collective resolve to use the moon and other astronomical bodies for peaceful purposes only. In 2019, over 8000 events in 96 countries celebrated the event with the theme “The Moon: Gateway to the Star” making it the largest annual event. This year the theme is “Satellites Improves Life.”

Satellites indeed improve life. Outer space has played a significant role in the massive developments in science and technology, which we take for granted in the 21st century. Today, communication is faster and efficient, the weather forecast authentic, navigation easier and the explorations of other parts of space are becoming more sophisticated…all thanks to the satellites.

Although our knowledge of outer space is increasing day by day, for some it is the unknown which is so fascinating, below we have created a list of our top sci-fi books here at Austin Macauley Publishers, each designed to provoke thoughts, question the known and propel the reader into the past and future.
