Autism isn’t the issue, ignorance is
Why is Autism Awareness Day important?
World Autism Awareness Day is an internationally recognised event to raise awareness about autistic individuals and rights. It is to aid the fight again ableism globally. World Autism Day is an opportunity in understanding autism and promoting inclusion for autism.
We at Austin Macauley Publishers want to work hard in reducing the stigma around autism. Autism advocacy should not just be highlighted one day of the year, but throughout. Remember, there are many successful individuals who have proven that Autism isn’t the issue, ignorance is. From Dan Akroyd to Bill Gates and Mozart, they are all living proof that autism is not definitive of who someone is or what they are capable of.
Autism services:
There are many different organisations and services individuals can reach out to such as:
- Home - Resources for Autism
- Autism Together – Services for adults with autism and their loved ones
- Home – Beyond Autism
- Autism Anglia is an independent charity that provides care and support to autistic children, adults, and their families in East Anglia. (autism-anglia.org.uk)
- Home - Autism | Autistica
Our Books centred around autism:
If you do not feel your loved one will feel supported or understood through services, sometimes it\'s through words and learning from others\' experiences. We have a range of books which individuals can benefit from.
Our books are not only just for individuals with Autism but the families going through it with them, or their friends trying to understand the situation better. Or even someone who wants to help in reducing the stigma around autism.
A light-hearted view of how autism impacts an average household. Where the autistic child is totally oblivious to how their behaviour and actions appear to the outside world, and where the Carer, initially struggling with the challenges, and at times fumbling their way through, eventually comes to the realisation that by allowing the child to be their authentic self, everything else falls into place.
Linda’s first exposure to autism came from working with a specialist charity. Up to then she had no appreciation of the many shapes of autism, and from the experiences of this unique working environment, was able to identify the traits in her own grandchildren. One of whom the book is based.
There is no right or wrong way of dealing with an autistic child and this book in no way suggests best practices or solutions to autistic behaviour. It is more about how we change our perceptions, and accept the uniqueness of our child.
Autism is super. Autism is cool.
I\'m the same as you.
This is a lovely book about a young boy called Noah, who has autism.
In this book, Noah tells us what it\'s like to live with autism. He is an inspiration to other boys and girls who have the same condition. It will teach them that they can achieve anything, even despite having autism. It’s a super uplifting story of determination.
My clients over the years have repeatedly asked for an easy-to-read book, saying, “We want to take home what’s in your head.” So, this is an everyday-language explanation of all things Aspie, written for Aspies and non-Aspies. Aspies repeatedly ask me to explain how non-Aspies think and work, and neurotypicals are often confused by Aspies. Many interesting case studies and illustrations (it is said that a picture is worth a thousand words) are included to aid these social understandings and interactions. Each chapter is self-contained, so that a reader can quickly get answers and tools in an overall synopsis contained in one section. The last chapter is a show-case collection of individual personal stories and expressions. The Aspie Book is written in non-academic language as much as possible, but also tries to demystify the academic language often used on this topic.
Amaya Learns About Her Thoughts:
Amaya Learns About Her Thoughts is the story of a little girl and her journey dealing with different thoughts in her head, some helpful and others hurtful, and how these make her feel. Amaya, with the help of her mum, follows a process to change the hurtful thoughts to helpful ones, easing the noise in her head and helping her to try new things. It’s a story to inspire parents and children to see how Amaya’s journey can help them too.
Sophie is a little girl awaiting a diagnosis of autism.
She finds social situations and friendships difficult and sees the world as a loud, bright, scary place.
Her mummy is an occupational therapist and knows about ways of helping Sophie to calm her down and help her.
With this help, she is able to make changes that help her, and her ‘different ways’ are turned into something positive.
How to Best Help an Autism Mum:
Life changes rapidly when a child is diagnosed with autism. As parents, we are shell-shocked, laid bare, and unsure as to where our new circumstances will lead us. With the right travelling companions, though, any journey becomes an adventure.
A tragic secret, a broken family, a lost boy – who was Edward, and what happened to him?
Life for Jen and her family, including her 11-year-old, autistic son Ned, hasn’t always been easy, but things are improving. Ned is thriving in the right school, and getting the support he needs to navigate his way through an alien and sometimes frightening world.
But Jen is troubled by something from her past. She’s haunted by a nightmare that has disturbed her since childhood, and she’s increasingly uneasy about her relationship with her cold, distant parents - what are they hiding from her?
‘Our Lost Boy’ follows Jen’s search for the truth, taking her back to her childhood home in Yorkshire where shocking memories are reawakened.
Jen and her mother, Maureen, have been pulled apart by a tragic secret, but when the truth is out can they mend their broken relationship? Can Jen forgive Maureen, and can Maureen forgive herself?
And what about Ned - can the 21st century offer him, and others like him, the future that Edward was denied?
