Educated in Preston Catholic College, Paul played amateur football before qualifying as a Class One referee and being appointed to the Northern Premier League.
Married to Margaret with two daughters and two granddaughters, he is a season ticket holder at Deepdale, home of Preston North End, the subject of his two previous books.
