Born in Northern Ireland and educated at Annadale Grammar School, Belfast and Trinity College Dublin, his career was in teaching in Macclesfield, Cheshire. The responsibility for delivering morning assemblies to large numbers of pupils as well as occasional preaching at his local church has given him much experience in communicating to a wide range of listeners.
